Sustainable energy giant Eneco announced plans to invest in a battery energy storage project in Ville-sur-Haine in Wallonia, using Tesla Megapacks.
The investment would mark the company’s largest battery project to date, which will “more efficiently balance Belgium’s electricity grid.”
About the project
Eneco will build a 50 megawatt/200 MWh battery energy storage, which will go operational in 2024.
According to the press release, Eneco has already secured the necessary requirements, including the permit and battery orders. Meanwhile, it is still working on the preparatory study before officially opening the facility by next year.
The Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) would include 53 Tesla Megapack units, totaling 50 MW/200 MWh of storage. It can apparently support the electric grid for 4 hours.
The BESS ensures that the rising levels of variable solar and wind energy may be used efficiently and maintains grid power balance in collaboration with Belgian high-voltage grid operator Elia.
“We are strengthening our renewable energy activities in order to contribute to reducing CO2 emissions.
In this regard, energy storage is very important to absorb the fluctuations of renewable energy. This project is an important step for us towards a CO2-neutral energy system in 2035.”

The BESS highlights the company’s significant investment in Belgium’s clean energy transition.
For context, Eneco is the largest green energy provider in the nation, with a portfolio that also includes almost 400,000 solar panels, 128 onshore wind turbines, and involvement in the two biggest offshore wind farms. The company’s focus on battery storage also ensures a stable, economical, and future-proof energy infrastructure.
On the other hand, Tesla has expanded its Megapack production to Giga Shanghai. It has also begun production at a new California plant.
