Tesla continues to lead the German electric vehicle industry with its popular electric crossover, Tesla Model Y. According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), it sold a total of 5,408 units in February 2024 alone.
This remarkable sales figure enabled America’s electric crossover to advance as the top-selling SUV and battery electric vehicle (BEV) in the country.
Tesla Model Y’s lead
According to the sales data, Germany sold 61,925 SUVs last month. Therefore, the Tesla Model Y’s 5,408 unit sales accounted for 8.7% of the country’s total SUV sales in the given period. It is indeed remarkable, considering that SUVs hold 28.5% of the entire German automotive sales.
In the all-electric vehicle segment, the Tesla Model Y reached a whopping 19.7% market share in February 2024. For context, Germany sold a total of 27,479 BEVs.
Passenger plug-in EV sales in Germany – February 2024
Tesla’s Model Y undoubtedly made a huge contribution to Germany’s electric vehicle industry growth. According to the data, passenger plug-in electric vehicles’ market share was 19.3% last month. Of that total, BEVs accounted for 12.6%, while PHEVs held a 6.7% share. These rates compare with 21.5% overall, 15.7% BEV, and 5.8% PHEV from the same period last year.
It turns out that BEV sales have not yet recovered after the government suddenly withdrew purchase incentives in late December 2023.
