Tesla’s popular electric crossover Model Y is on track to deliver another significant milestone in one of its key markets beyond North America. According to the Danish publication FDM, the all-electric Tesla is just 10 unit sales away from beating Denmark’s 37-year vehicle sales record as of December 19.

Opel Kadett’s long-standing sales record at risk

The report asserted that Opel Kadett set the 16,686 vehicle sales record in Denmark way back in 1986, marking the highest number of cars sold in a single calendar year.

However, that record is at risk from Tesla Model Y’s unstoppable dominance in the country. The electric crossover is reportedly just 10 unit sales away from beating Opel Kadett’s 16,686 unit sales record as of December 19.

On December 20, the Tesla Model Y officially advanced as the most popular vehicle in Denmark in a year.

Teslarati reported that the Tesla registers 100 Model Ys per day on average.

Tesla also dominates the used car market

The Tesla Model Y is apparently not only popular in the new car market but also highly preferred by used car buyers in Denmark.

According to the report, Denmark recorded about 3,010 Tesla Model Ys as imported used cars this year to date.

However, its sibling, the Tesla Model 3, is more popular among Danish used car buyers, with 4,318 imports in the same period.

Tesla’s success in Denmark

American electric automaker Tesla’s notable success in Denmark is unsurprising, considering its aggressive pricing strategy and innovative technologies.

Tesla’s price cuts in Denmark enabled the Model Y to undercut competitors by DKK 20,000-50,000. These major price reductions in January encouraged Danish drivers to consider EVs as an alternative to traditional internal combustion engine-powered cars.

According to Motor Mouth, Tesla’s popularity in the country is highly apparent in its sales and delivery performance this year.

The Tesla Model Y reportedly sold 16,833 units so far this year, exceeding any other EV rivals in the Danish market. The Tesla Model 3 ranked second with sales of 3,890 units.

In addition, the Musk-led company also has a notable share in the overall Danish electric vehicle market at 34.5%. German legacy automaker Volkswagen trails behind with a market share of 10.6%, while BMW only has 6.6%.

Tesla Model Y’s remarkable milestone of breaking the 37-year sales record in Denmark demonstrates the brand’s unstoppable growth and influence in the EV market. The all-electric crossover continues to play a significant role in encouraging Danish drivers to ditch their gas-powered cars and shift to more sustainable alternatives.
