After the Tesla Model Y rolled out in Europe earlier this year, the electric SUV immediately rose to the top among newly registered renewable energy vehicles in the continent. However, CleanTechnica reports that the Model 3 eventually claimed the top spot in November, pushing the Model Y to second place.

Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA) data reveals that the Tesla Model 3 surpassed the Model Y as the most electric vehicle registered in Germany in November.

With major automakers like Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz having headquarters there, the German car market continues to hold a substantial role in the overall European market.

Tesla Model Y vs. Model 3 sales in November

In comparison to the 3,687 Tesla Model Y vehicles sold in Germany in November, the Model 3 sold 6,811 units in the same month.

Furthermore, marking the first deliveries of both models in Europe, Tesla sold 106 Model S and 35 Model X in Germany last month.

With a YoY growth of 93% to 10,819 vehicles delivered in November, Tesla’s deliveries in Germany reached record highs. That growth marked November as the automaker’s second-best sales month behind September.

Moreover, the entire auto industry also had a strong month. However, it only increased by 31% yearly, underscoring Tesla’s growing market domination as rival automakers race to close the gap.

Germany’s auto market

The Toyota Yaris (2,949) and Ford Kuga (4,649), as well as a variety of other vehicles with gas and electric drivetrains, were among the top-registered automobiles in Germany.

However, plug-in hybrid vehicles only made up 17.1% of the total auto market share, compared to battery-electric vehicles, which made up roughly 22.3%.

Tesla’s footprint in Germany

With 9,846 units sold in September, the Model Y overtook the gas-powered Volkswagen Golf as the best-selling vehicle in Germany for the first time. In contrast, just 3,878 Model 3 were sold during the month, placing it as the eighth most popular car on the market.

Concurrently, Tesla sold 13,724 vehicles in Germany in September, making it the company’s biggest sales month to date.

The German auto industry is still an intensely watched sales sector. The following years should be exciting as car brands such as Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes rush to introduce their first few EVs.

In the past few months, most of Tesla’s deliveries in Germany have come from Gigafactory Shanghai. However, as production skyrockets, the automaker’s freshly created Giga Berlin is prepared to shape the future of German sales.

Without a doubt, Tesla has yet again lived up to its name and remains on top. With Tesla Model 3 ruling the German market, the EV company has a bright future. However, it does not only mean a Tesla win within Germany but also implies a huge advantage Tesla has in the European EV market.
