Tesla seemed to unintentionally leak one of its first CCS-compatible Superchargers with the Magic Dock in its mobile app in Hawthorne, California, based on a Tweet from Tesla enthusiast Hayden Sawyer.
Tesla’s Supercharger expansion efforts
It is worth noting that the EV giant has already begun deploying its Supercharger network in numerous European countries in 2022. Meanwhile, the US launch is anticipated to follow this year.
Intriguingly, Tesla seemed to leak the first Superchargers with CCS compatibility in California and unveiled the Magic Dock ahead of the upcoming official launch.
What’s the big deal?
Tesla already utilizes the CCS connector in Europe. However, Tesla is expected to struggle to launch its Supercharger network in North America as it currently uses its proprietary connector in the market.
Moreover, it is not a secret that Tesla aims to establish its Superchargers as the new North American charging standard. However, the automaker’s strategy became tougher in the latter part of 2022 with its decision to open-source its connector.
Nonetheless, the CCS adapter appears to be still part of Tesla’s intention to support non-Tesla cars at its charging stations, as the leak of info implies. Interestingly, the latest mobile app update revealed the modified Supercharger stall’s render.
The connector receptacle is completely different and significantly bigger, which seems to be the “Magic Dock,” as seen in the image above. In essence, the Magic Dock is a CCS converter that functions as the new Tesla connector dock for Tesla owners when CCS is not required.
Meanwhile, non-Tesla owners can utilize the Supercharger with the CCS adapter as the innovation allows them to undock both.
It is interesting to note that the mobile app update may indicate that Tesla is preparing to use this technology at its Supercharger station in North America. It might be wise to check your neighborhood Supercharger to determine if this Tesla Magic Dock has arrived.
