Tesla’s construction of the new Gigafactory Mexico may need more time as the automaker is developing a new production line for the highly awaited $25,000 electric car, as asserted by Nuevo León Governor Samuel García Sepúlveda.

That said, Tesla may take approximately 12 to 15 months to develop the Gigafactory Mexico, Governor Sepúlveda told Milenio.

It is worth noting that this timeframe is substantially longer than Gigafactory Shanghai’s development, which is built in just nine months. This record makes the Chinese factory the fastest one built than Giga Berlin and Giga Texas

“In the beginning, there was talk that [Tesla] wanted to break the nine-month Shanghai record, but with the meetings, we have been having, the model they want to bring out, which is the economic model that is going to be sold massively, is going to require a whole new production line.”

Tesla to build its next-gen EVs in Mexico

Notably, the leading American automaker announced three next-gen EVs as part of its Master Plan 3 during Investor Day.

The first one is the compact BEV that would supposedly cost between $25,000 to $30,000. As implied by the governor’s statement, Tesla is planning to build its first-ever mass-market offering in Gigafactory Mexico.

“Right now, that production line is in the workshop, more like, working on workshops, to have a rendering and start the construction, so now we estimate that it could take between 12, 14, 15 months due to the large space that it will occupy. That production line.”

Samuel García Sepúlveda, Nuevo León Governor via Milenio

All that said, the Gigafactory Mexico is projected to be bigger than Tesla’s US primary plant Giga Texas.

Giga Mexico is the first step in Governor Seplveda’s plan to transform Santa Catarina into a sustainable innovation cluster. He believes that Tesla’s gigafactory would bring in investments for Santa Catarina and the nearby states and cities.

The governor continued by saying that Santa Catarina responded quickly when Tesla confirmed Giga Mexico investment. He further asserted that the city government has been striving to expedite Gigafactory Mexico’s water, energy, and gas requirements.

“We are ready, we have to wait for the final render to then adapt, polish, and start the projects that Nuevo León has been ready to start since November, and as soon as Tesla tells us to go ahead, we will start.”

Samuel García Sepúlveda, Nuevo León Governor via Milenio

Tesla will spend $5 Billion to build its new Mexico Gigafactory and be >4,000 acres and employ >7000 people, 2X larger than Giga Texas.

This could be the largest new Tesla factory and will be finished in 9 months w/ Tom Zhu & team.
