Leading American automaker Tesla has revealed its own version of a bird-eye view feature with its new 3D reconstruction park assist system, Not a Tesla App reports.
The new feature is apparently part of the Musk-led company’s 2023 Holiday Update.
What’s special about a bird’s eye view?
Bird’s eye view feature in electric vehicles is basically a vision monitoring system that offers drivers a top view to park and navigate easily, even in tight spaces.
It is indeed a useful feature that makes driving less stressful and complex. Therefore, it is unsurprising that it has already become a common feature in luxury models. Lower-cost models also offer the feature as part of extra tech packages.
However, luxury brand Tesla did not initially adopt the bird’s eye view feature. It prompted current owners and interested customers to call for the automaker to also launch the same feature.
Chief Executive Elon Musk alluded to the imminent arrival of the innovative feature in 2020. Finally, Tesla released a similar feature called “High Fidelity Park Assist.”
Tesla’s High Fidelity Park Assist
According to Tesla’s Autopilot software head Ashok Elluswamy, the High Fidelity Park Assist is already rolling out to owners without ultrasonic sensors under the 2023 Holiday Update.
As you can see in the demonstration attached to the X post above, Tesla’s High Fidelity Park Assist feature is not exactly the conventional “bird-eye view.” Nonetheless, it offers the same functions and offers more capabilities.
Mr. Elluswamy stated that the new feature replaces the previous 2D obstacle band customers had with a 3D reconstruction of surroundings while parking. It is similar to a 360-degree camera, but it displays 3D models generated in real-time.
“This is an extension of our Occupancy Network, with much higher resolution to help with tight parking maneuvers. The obstacles are modeled as a continuous distance field. This allows us to represent arbitrary shapes in a smooth and computationally efficient way. The vehicles you see are not some fixed meshes, but the network’s real-time prediction of the shape.”

Coverage
Electrek noted that the High Fidelity Park Assist is only available to Tesla electric cars without ultrasonic sensors running on either hardware 3 or 4.0. Therefore, it only includes the following models:
- Tesla Model 3 and Y since 2022
- Tesla Model S and X since 2023
Nonetheless, Mr. Elluswamy disclosed Tesla’s plans to also expand the feature to older models with ultrasonic sensors. However, he omitted to offer a specific timeline.
Tesla’s move to launch the new High Fidelity Park Assist significantly demonstrates its valuation for its owners, delivering on their highly demanded features. The availability of this new parking assistance technology can undoubtedly attract new customers to consider Tesla models over other competitors.
