Tesla proudly announced on February 27 that its Gigafactory Berlin reached a production rate of 4,000 Model Y per week through its official Twitter account for Europe.
Remarkably, the 4k/week capacity is a thousand higher, just more than two months earlier, demonstrating the Gigafactory’s significant increase in production.
All that considered, Tesla now has an annual production rate of approximately 200,000 units if we calculate the figure for around 50 weeks. However, it has no plans to stop there as the automaker continues to ramp up production to hit its next target of 5,000 EVs per week.
Tesla Giga Berlin milestones
Below are Tesla’s production milestones in Giga Berlin:
Date | Weekly Production Rate |
March 2022 | Started turning on the production line |
June 18, 2022 | 1,000 Tesla Model Y/week |
October 1, 2022 | 2,000 Tesla Model Y/week |
December 18, 2022 | 3,000 Tesla Model Y/week |
February 27, 2023 | 4,000 Tesla Model Y/week |
It is worth remembering that the Giga Berlin experienced a challenging start in 2022. It reported significant delays and even had disputes with environmentalist organizations and regulators. That said, Giga Berlin was able to proceed with production in March 2022 instead of the initial schedule of 2021.
Nonetheless, Tesla succeeded in increasing production with a peak of 3,000/week in late December 2022, just nine months following the opening of Giga Berlin.
Ten weeks later, the automaker reported another milestone: a 4,000/week production rate in February. These figures demonstrate a whopping 33% growth in production in just a short time.
We can only wait and see if the EV giant will eventually reach 5,000/week or even the plant’s maximum target of 10,000/week, equating to about 500,000/year. Tesla also intends to produce its own battery cells at the factory to support the enormous number of EVs it plans to build.
