Tesla reportedly ended Megapack storage battery production at Giga Nevada, with the last unit produced five days ago.
Tesla investor Sawyer Merritt reported via Twitter that Tesla has finally relocated the Megapack production at the company’s Megafactory in Lathrop, CA. Merritt also indicated the LinkedIn post of a Tesla equipment maintenance technician in his Tweet, which first broke the news. Refer to the attachment below:
As you can see, the post was brief and only included one photo of the last Megapack leaving the factory.
Tesla to work on its two main goals for Giga Nevada
In essence, Tesla’s move to end the Megapack production at its original factory may not be cause for celebration. However, it might be the beginning of something great for the mediocre factory in Nevada.
Giga Nevada can now pursue its two main objectives: mass-producing 100GWh of 4680 battery cells and ramping up Semi production.
Tesla’s website has not been updated to indicate the change in Megapack production. Nonetheless, it has indicated its new plans for the Giga Nevada.
“Located less than an hour from Lake Tahoe, Gigafactory Nevada is one of the world’s highest volume plants for electric motors, energy storage products, vehicle powertrains, and batteries—producing billions of cells per year. Now, we’re continuing to grow Gigafactory Nevada with two new facilities: a 100 GWh 4680 cell factory and our first high-volume Semi factory.”

Notably, Tesla desperately needs as many battery cells as it can produce. The necessary battery cells largely limit the supply of its bestselling Model 3 and Y production. In addition, the long-awaited Cybertruck and Tesla Semi will soon undergo mass production, requiring more battery cells.

Despite the sudden production halt of Megapacks in Giga Nevada, CEO Elon Musk has remained adamant that Tesla’s Energy division will eventually generate more money than its auto business. Now, Tesla Energy can focus more on hitting its growth objectives with more dedicated production in Shanghai and Lathrop.
