Tesla is almost done installing the Megapacks in Giga Texas for the factory’s own Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). With this sustainable project, the company will be able to collect power from the factory’s solar panels and store them in the Megapacks.

About the BESS

The Giga Texas’ BESS comprises 68 Megapack units of 2 megawatts each. In addition, the Texas LCRA document indicated that the total capacity of the BESS will hit approximately 136 MW.

Renowned drone operator Joe Tegtmeyer has once again revealed some relevant details from his consistent monitoring of the activities in Giga Texas.

He stated that the automaker has successfully finished installing 44 Megapacks of the total 68 units on the enormous BESS erected on the factory site. That said, Tesla is almost done with the installation process.

Interestingly, Tesla only installed 6 Megapacks as of July 2, indicating that the company managed to install 38 units in just 15 days. In that sense, Tesla currently has an average daily installation capacity of 2.5 Megapacks.

All that said, the automaker will be able to install the remaining few Megapacks as soon as the following week.

Tesla’s efforts in Texas’ energy industry

Tesla was reportedly planning to penetrate Texas’ electricity industry in early March 2021, which materialized in 2022. The automaker developed the BESS connected to the grid in Angleton, deploying 81 Megapacks in the process.

In addition, Tesla also submitted an application to become an electricity provider in the state in late August 2022. A few months later, the Musk-led automaker obtained the necessary certification from the Texas Public Utilities Commission in a statement on November 3, 2021.

All that said, Tesla is actively trying to improve the Texas electricity grid as it has profound problems. In fact, Tesla’s US Energy Markets Policy Lead Arushi Sharma Frank, in partnership with ERCOT, has already conducted numerous works in the past to implement further improvements to the ratification process in Texas, aiming to make its electricity grid more reliable and safe.

Tesla’s successful completion of the Megapack-powered BESS at Giga Texas will undoubtedly enable the company to sustainably collect and save the necessary energy for its operations. That said, the factory can depend on its stored power, decreasing its dependence on the electricity grid.

Apart from that, Tesla’s substantial investment in renewable energy projects will further promote sustainability on a global scale.
