Electric vehicle giant Tesla just celebrated another major milestone over the weekend. According to the company’s X post, the Fremont Factory and Giga Nevada have successfully built 3 million electric cars.
Tesla celebrates Fremont & Giga Nevada’s feat
Tesla’s main account announced the 3 millionth electric vehicle production milestone at its Fremont Factory and Giga Nevada on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on May 18, 2024.
The X post indicated two photos of the production team with the Jubilee EV, a deep blue metallic Tesla Model S.
Like previous Fremont Factory production milestones, Tesla also congratulated Giga Nevada for supplying many of the batteries and drive units utilized in the factory.
Production progress
In hindsight, Tesla officially produced its two millionth electric vehicle at Fremont Factory and Giga Nevada in July of 2022.
Therefore, Tesla Fremont Factory managed to roll its three millionth car off the production line just less than two years. As per Drive Tesla Canada’s calculation, it equates to approximately 45,000 EVs monthly production rate (540,000/year) in the Californian factory.
Before that, Tesla achieved its millionth EV production milestone overall in 2020. At the time, Giga Shanghai was already ramping up production, while Giga Berlin was still under construction.
About the factories
Giga Nevada currently produces Tesla Fremont Factory’s key components, such as drive motors, powertrains, and battery packs.
The factory is currently undergoing expansion to produce 4680 battery cells and electric Tesla Semi units. Tesla held the ground-breaking ceremony at the site in January 2024. After the expansion’s completion, Tesla expects Giga Nevada to add 6,500 full-time roles and produce sufficient 4680 battery cells for 2 million light-duty EVs annually.
On the other hand, the Fremont Factory used to be one of the most productive auto plants in the United States. However, Tesla’s other factories managed to catch up or even surpass Fremont Factory’s EV production. Nonetheless, it still has a crucial role in Tesla’s global production strategy. Moreover, it is still highly efficient and productive. It also remains the only Tesla factory to produce four different EVs, the S3XY models.
Earlier this year, the Musk-led company started producing the updated Tesla Model 3 “Highland” in Fremont Factory after its launch in H2 2023.
Tesla also recently rolled out the updated Tesla Model 3 Performance variant with a base price of $54,990 in the US market. Notably, this price excludes both the federal and local tax credits and follows a few price adjustments.
