Musk-led automaker Tesla is reportedly interested in buying a small German wireless charging startup Wiferion, per a filing in the commercial register.

“The shareholders intend to sell their shares in the company to Tesla International BV by means of a purchase agreement.”

For context, Wireless charging technology eliminates the need for physical connections, such as cables and plugs. EV owners can simply park their vehicles over a wireless charging pad or station, and the charging process begins automatically. This convenience makes charging effortless and user-friendly, reducing the hassle of handling cables and ensuring a seamless charging experience.

Tesla may launch its own wireless charging in the future

It is worth noting that this news emerged following the EV giant’s hints that it might soon develop its own wireless charger product.

Tesla’s intention to develop a wireless charging technology is apparently part of its preparation for “full” self-driving cars. If Tesla EVs could eventually drive autonomously, it is only right for them to charge themselves without a human needing to plug them in.

During the 2023 Investor Day presentation, Tesla previewed a Model S using a wireless induction charger in a residential garage. The charger resembles a massive Wall Connector linked to a charging mat below the Model S’ rear. Refer to the photo attached to the Tweet below:

Remarkably, Tesla appears to have potentially found a method to accelerate the process.

According to the report, two of Wiferion’s investors confirmed that “an exit had taken place.” However, they refrained from dropping a name. Nonetheless, one investor hinted that it is an “interesting buyer.”
