Tesla dominates YTD global energy storage deployment in H1 2023

Tesla successfully advanced as the leading energy storage system supplier globally in the first six months of 2023. The Musk-led company’s energy storage deployment reached an unbeatable record of 7 GWh, SMM data revealed.

Energy storage deployment in Jan – June

The report indicated that global energy storage shipments from January to June recorded a total capacity of 72.4 GWh. 

Notably, six Chinese battery makers dominated the top 10 ranking with a combined capacity of 47 GWh. It accounted for 65% of the overall energy storage deployment in H1 2023.

Meanwhile, foreign deployments (including Tesla) reached a total capacity of 25.4 GWh. It accounted for the remaining 35% share of the global market.

Top suppliers – H1 2023

Domestic deployment

Tesla led the list with an energy storage capacity of 7.5 GWh in the first six months of the year. It accounted for a notable 10% of the Chinese market.

Chinese companies BYD and Sungrow followed Tesla, with both of them reaching almost 7 GWh. Together, they contributed 30% of the overall local shipments.

Other companies that got in the top 10 include HyperStrong, Nextera, Huawei, Fluence, Powin, KEHUA TECH, and Narada. They reported energy storage deployments of 2.5 GWh to 4 GWh.

Overseas deployment

As for the overseas market, energy storage shipments reached 25 GWh.

Tesla’s record of 7.5 GWh accounted for a significant 20% of the overall deployment.

Nextera, Fluence, and Powin followed Tesla with a combined capacity of 3 GWh. Meanwhile, other companies reported an average of approximately 1 GWh in H1 2023.
