The popular Petersen Automotive Museum formally launched an auction for a low-VIN Tesla Cybertruck in Los Angeles on October 8. According to reports, the all-electric pickup was sold for a whopping $400,00.
Auction highlights
As revealed by multiple video footages surfacing the internet, the low VIN 2024 Tesla Cybertruck fetched an enormous amount of $400,000 at the 29th Petersen Gala auction on Saturday. Refer to the video attached to the X post below:
It is also worth noting that prominent TV host and Tesla enthusiast Jay Leno is one that hosted the auction for the highly awaited Cybertruck, along with Emmy Winner. The event itself hints that the all-electric pickup will get high biddings, given that a mere seat at the event’s tables already costs $1,750 per person.
According to Torque News, the bidding kicked off virtually at $55,000 and quickly jumped to $400,000. The museum proceeded with the in-person bidding at the 29th annual gala after the online event.
However, it must be noted that the Petersen Automotive Museum has not yet released an official statement about the auction results. There are also still no reports regarding the person or entity behind the highest bid.
Tesla Cybertruck to offer three variants
Future Fund’s Gary Black forecasts Tesla to launch three Cybertruck variants with a price range of $49,900 and $79,900.
However, Tesla has not yet revealed any official details about the Cybertruck’s possible variations.
In contrast, a crowdsourced reservation tracker indicated four variants for the Cybertruck. According to the data, the dual-motor variant is the most popular choice among customers, with a 44.06% share. Here’s the data:
Trim | Trim Reservations | Percent Trim^ | Trim | FSD Reservation | Percent FSD |
Single-Motor | 3532 | 8.12% | Single-Motor | 1691 | 47.88% |
Dual-Motor | 21652 | 44.06% | Dual-Motor | 12808 | 59.15% |
Tri-Motor | 20050 | 39.17% | Tri-Motor | 15868 | 79.14% |
Quad Motor (started 12/4/21) | 1560 | 8.65% | Quad Motor (started 12/4/21) | 1075 | 68.91% |
Any | 46794 | Any | 31442 | 67.19% |
Nonetheless, it is worth noting that the $400,00 bidding is higher than Black’s estimated base price by eightfold.
Timeline
Tesla aims to launch the Cybertruck in late 2023. In hindsight, Tesla Chief Elon Musk initially introduced the electric pickup in November 2019.
However, it faced major challenges like supply chain constraints and COVID-induced lockdowns, which caused multiple production delays.
Finally, the Musk-led company is nearing the official launch of the steel-body EV this year.
The $400,000 bid for the Cybertruck is unsurprising, considering it has already surpassed 2 million reservations. Therefore, some reservation holders may worry about the potential wait time for Tesla to meet the significant demand.
