Tesla finally delivered the initial batch of Cybertruck production units to its first lucky customers on November 30. However, the significant changes in prices and driving range compared to the 2019 unveiling disappointed some of the potential customers.
Nonetheless, Tesla introduced a “range extender” for the Cybertruck to at least get close to the driving range figure it initially expected four years ago. However, the estimated pricing of the range extender may set customers off at $16,000 on top of the expensive overall vehicle cost.
The Page Source of the Tesla Cybertruck’s payment page revealed the $16,000 price along with the range extender.
Tesla explains what a range extender is
The range extender will apparently boost the driving range of the Cybertruck’s top two trims by 30%.
During the Delivery Event, Tesla Chief Elon Musk focused the presentation on showing off the Cybertruck’s remarkable capabilities and advantages over other trucks. However, he did not disclose key details such as the pricing, trims, and battery range.
After the event, Tesla published the Cybertruck’s online configurator along with the key specifications and pricing people highly anticipated. One of these details includes the range extender that stimulated confusion among interested customers and Tesla fans.
To address people’s questions, Senior Vice President Drew Bagline clarified that the range extender is a toolbox-sized battery placed in the truck’s bed. Once owners tap into this additional battery, they will obviously gain a range boost.
Tesla CEO Musk further elaborated that the range extender accessory will claim about 1/3rd of the truck’s bed. It promises to be useful on “very long trips” or extreme towing needs.
“Optional pack that fits in about 1/3 of the truck bed. Still room for plenty of of cargo.
It’s meant for very long trips or towing heavy things up mountains.”

Significance
Tesla revealed that the Tri-Motor “Cyberbeast” will have a driving range of 320 miles, while the Dual Motor AWD will enable 340 miles.
With the range extender, these driving ranges will increase to 470+ miles and 440+ miles, respectively. Refer to the table below:
Tesla Cybertruck | Rear-Wheel Drive | All-Wheel Drive | CyberBeast |
Range | 250 miles | 340 miles | 320 miles |
Range with extender??? | Not mentioned | 470+ miles | 440+ miles |
For comparison, Tesla initially announced that the Cybertruck would offer a driving range of up to more than 500 miles.
All that said, the range extender is undoubtedly a useful accessory for the Cybertruck. It will enable drivers to access a reserve battery pack during emergency or long-distance travel.
It is also worth noting that the Cybertruck features Tesla’s first-ever bidirectional charging tech called “Powershare.” It will enable the Cybertruck to support vehicle-to-load (V2L), vehicle-to-home (V2H), and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) capabilities.
