Tesla has just achieved a new significant milestone in its home market, with the Cybertruck becoming the top-selling electric pickup model in the second quarter of the year despite only being available for two full quarters.
Cybertruck beats Ford F-150 Lightning for the first time
Tesla disclosed in its Q2 2024 production and delivery report that “other models” deliveries reached a total of 21,551, which consists of the Model S, Model X, and Semi.
Ford and Rivian, currently the only electric pickup truck makers in the US, also already disclosed their quarterly sales figures. The comparison of their quarterly results suggests that the Tesla Cybertruck has already advanced to the top spot of the electric pickup truck sales ranking in the US market.
While Tesla does not release the Cybertruck’s official sales results, two recent safety recalls provided a good indication of the number of deliveries in Q2 2024.
According to @TeslaTruckClub’s calculations, the Cybertruck deliveries hit at least 12,408 units by June 30 based on the safety recalls data: “3,878 units delivered by April 4, 11,383 by May 26, and 11,688 by June 6, with an average of 30 deliveries per day between May 26 and June 6.”
In comparison, the Ford F-150 Lightning only delivered 7,902 units in Q2 2024. While Rivian does not offer a breakdown of its sales per model, it outlined that it sold 13,790 R1T and R1S units in the second quarter. Notably, it previously asserted that R1S SUVs represent about 70% of their reservations. This considered, R1T sales would be below that of the Tesla Cybertruck.
The official Cybertruck X account reposted Sawyer Merritt’s post with the same claim.
Production ramp up
In hindsight, Tesla formally delivered the first 10 Cybertruck units on November 30, 2023. However, it did not kick off deliveries in earnest until early 2024.
Despite the delays, the company managed to quickly ramp up production. It recently dislosed that the Cybertruck hit 1,300 units production in a week at Giga Texas.
In addition, Tesla apparently did not struggle to sell the currently only available Cybertruck Foundation Series despite being more expensive by $20,000 than the standard variant.
The Cybertruck’s advancement to being the king of the American electric pickup truck market is indeed a significant feat for the Musk-led company. It would be interesting to see how the Cybertruck can become the most popular pickup truck model by overthrowing the gas-powered Ford F-150 series.
