Tesla Cybertruck claims 5th spot in EV registrations ranking in May 2024

Tesla just launched the Cybertruck in the US by the end of November 2023. Despite the relatively short period, the stainless steel electric pickup has already claimed the fifth spot in EV registrations ranking in the domestic market in May 2024.

The Tesla Cybertruck’s registrations hit a total of 3,907 units in May 2024 alone, Automotive News reported, citing S&P Global Mobility’s data.

The strong sales performance of the Cybertruck enabled the Musk-led electric automaker to place three of its offerings in the top five. As expected, the Tesla Model Y crossover and Model 3 sedan claimed the top two spots, respectively.

“It’s surprising because the Cybertruck is such a unique, one-of-a-kind, unusual vehicle, really as far out of the mainstream as you can get. On the other hand, it doesn’t surprise me because Elon Musk thrives on doing things like this.”

Tom Libby, Associate Director of Industry Analysis at S&P Global Mobility

Cybertruck dominates electric pickup segment

In another major achievement, the Tesla Cybertruck has already made a huge impact in the electric pickup segment in the US.

In fact, it beat the sales of its closest rivals in May 2024, even when combined.

As mentioned, the Tesla Cybertruck sold a total of 3,907 units. On the other hand, the Ford F-150 Lightning reported only 2,353 new registrations. Meanwhile, the Rivian registered a total of 1,237 R1Ts in May 2024.

Presented below are the electric pickup registrations in the US in May 2024:

 Truck ModelRegistrations
1Tesla Cybertruck3,907
2Ford F-150 Lightning2,353
3Rivian R1T1,237
4Chevrolet Silverado EV668
5GMC Hummer EV Pickup359
 Total8,524

Remarkably, the Tesla Cybertruck contributed more than 45% of registrations of the 8,524 total in the said period.

However, the popular Ford F-150 Lightning remained the top-selling model in the year-to-date list. It sold a total of 13,443 units from January to May 2024, while the Cybertruck only had 7,879 units. Nonetheless, the Tesla electric pickup model is rapidly advancing, considering it only hit the market on November 30, 2023.

The Rivian R1T trailed behind the Tesla Cybertruck with its 3,881 unit registrations this year to date.

The dominance of the Tesla Cybertruck in the electric pickup segment is indeed intriguing, considering that it is more expensive than the Ford F-150 Lightning and the Rivian R1T.

S&P Global Mobility’s Tom Libby asserted that the Tesla Cybertruck is in “uncharted waters” because it has a very different design from its rivals.

“I just don’t see how it becomes anything approaching a mainstream vehicle, given its design. Elon Musk is so visionary, he’s so out in front of everyone else, and he’s succeeded. That’s why I’m not going to dismiss it completely. Frankly, if it was from another company, I would dismiss it.”

Tom Libby, Associate Director of Industry Analysis at S&P Global Mobility

Tesla Cybertruck’s potential to lead the US electric pickup market

The Tesla Cybertruck’s remarkable registration figures this year suggest its potential to advance as the top-selling electric pickup model in the US market in FY 2024.

In addition, Tesla currently has a significant order backlog for the Cybertruck. Tesla is also on track to launch the new versions of the electric pickup beyond the Foundation Series.

It is also worth noting that the Cybertruck already managed to advance as the most popular selling electric pickup in the US market in Q2 2024.

📐 In Q2, the Tesla Cybertruck became the top-selling electric pickup truck in the U.S., surpassing the Ford F-150 Lightning.
