Billionaire Elon Musk is among the 100 most influential figures in the artificial intelligence (AI) industry, according to Time Magazine’s TIME100 AI list.

Baidu’s CEO Robin Li, Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk, Open AI’s founder Sam Altman, and Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang were among the world’s most influential people in #AI according to Time Magazine’s annual #TIME100AI List released yesterday. @Baidu_Inc @elonmusk @sama @nvidia pic.twitter.com/bLE5JE8kbB

Some of the people included in the list were OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, NVIDIA President Jensen Huang, and Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis.

Musk’s stance in AI

Business tycoon Elon Musk has publicly expressed his skepticism regarding AI development and application. He even called for the industry to temporarily stop AI training, along with other firms.

Ironically, he also seems to support the technology’s advancement.

Musk’s electric automaker, Tesla, is attempting to reach full autonomy with its Autopilot and Full Self-Driving software through AI.

Apart from that, the billionaire has also recently launched its new AI company, xAI. CEO Musk aims to leverage the startup to “understand reality.”

“I think I have been banging the drum on AI safety now for a long time. If I could press pause on AI or advanced AI digital superintelligence, I would. It doesn’t seem like that is realistic. So xAI is essentially going to build an AI, you know, you’ve got to grow an AI in a good way, hopefully.”

Elon Musk stated during the Twitter Spaces

Here's the SUPERCUT of the xAI Twitter space where @elonmusk and the @xai team discuss the future of Artificial General Intelligence and xAI's role in its development.

Length is ~50% shorter but contains the same level of detail.

All that said, Time Magazine recognized Elon Musk as one of the “Leaders” in the field of artificial intelligence.

About xAI

xAI is an AI-focused company that primarily aims to “develop the ‘theory of everything’ for large neural networks.”

— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 12, 2023

It consists of 12 members with high expertise in AI development (mostly from OpenAI, Microsoft, and Tesla), including the following: Igor Babuschkin, Manuel Kroiss, Yuhuai (Tony) Wu, Christian Szegedy, Jimmy Ba, Toby Pohlen, Ross Nordeen, Kyle Kosic, Greg Yang, Guodong Zhang, and Zihang Dai.

It aims to tap electric vehicle giant Tesla on AI software and silicon matters. It will also collaborate with Twitter to obtain relevant data to train its systems and develop “maximally curious” products.

Time100 AI list

The list separated the 100 most influential people in AI into four categories, including Leaders, Innovators, Shapers, and Thinkers.

“This doesn’t have to just be a conversation about driving wealth and driving company value. This has to be a conversation about how this technology and how the leaders in the space that Time has identified are going to make the world a safer, better place, and that we could leverage AI to solve, again, some of the biggest challenges.”

Time Chief Executive Officer Jessica Sibley

Apart from autonomous driving technologies and xAI, Musk is also advancing its AI development with his Optimus bot project and Neuralink. All that said, it is unsurprising that the business tycoon got on the Time100 AI list.
