Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk recently disclosed some context for the Full Self-Driving (FSD) 12.5 initial deployment strategy, stimulating significant excitement among owners and fans.
Musk outlines plan for initial release
CEO Elon Musk revealed that Tesla plans to focus the initial rollout of the highly anticipated FSD 12.5 software update on Model Y crossovers with Hardware 4.0 (HW4).
It must be noted that Tesla has already started deploying the FSD 12.5 software version to its first batch of users. However, longtime testers, including popular X content creator @WholeMarsBlog, observed that the company initially centralizes the rollout only to HW4-equipped models.
In response to the Tesla enthusiast’s X post, CEO Musk confirmed that the company is truly concentrating the FSD 12.5 rollout push on Model Y units with HW4 for now. Once the initial rollout succeeds, Tesla plans to gradually expand the deployment to other models.
Moreover, CEO Musk also disclosed that Tesla EVs with HW3 “would run the same parameter count, but requires extra work to optimize the code.”
Positive feedbacks
So far, Tesla’s FSD 12.5 has gained optimistic feedback from its longtime testers. However, some of the early users pointed out that this software update seemed to lack several features the company teased before, such as the following:
- city and highway software stacks merger
- vision monitoring support for drivers wearing sunglasses
Tesla Autopilot Director Ashok Elluswamy disclosed that the company plans to launch these features for FSD 12.5.x rollouts, emphasizing that the FSD 12.5 focuses on improving safety and smoothness.
CEO Musk expects the FSD 12.5 and probably 12.6 to enable Tesla to bring the FSD Supervised in other countries, starting with Europe and China.
“With version 12.5, and maybe 12.6, but pretty soon. We will ask for regular regulatory approval of the Tesla supervised FSD in Europe, China, and other countries. I think we’re likely to receive that before the end of the year, which will be a helpful demand driver in those regions, obviously.”
