More about the Tesla Powerwall

Production progress

Tesla’s shared its previous Powerwall installation milestone of 250,000 units on November 17, 2021.

That considered, Tesla managed to install another 250,000 units in just one and a half years. The production rate must be significantly more than 150,000 units annually over the preceding 18 months. According to some reports, the present output could potentially be twice as high.

Capacity

Tesla’s current Powerwall version has approximately 13.5 kilowatt-hours of usable battery capacity (14 kWh total). It also offers up to 5 kilowatts of continuous power output, which enables up to 7 kW for a 10-second peak.

Meanwhile, the Tesla Powerwall+ unit is the company’s integrated solar battery system which includes two separate inverters for battery and solar. It generates a nominal energy of about 13.5 kWh, while its continuous power output is up to 7 kW off-grid. It can also support up to 9.6 kW on its own, backed with a solar system.

Therefore, the total battery capacity of 500,000 Powerwalls would be around 6.8 GWh. It is considerably lower as Tesla initially had models with a varying battery capacity of around 7 kWh or 10 kWh.

Pricing

Tesla Powerwall prices depend on various factors, including the type, market, and number of units. It also has installation costs.

For instance, US installation can cost $8,700. It should be noted that the cost per Powerwall drops as the number of units customers buy increases. It might only cost $24,000 for three Powerwalls.

In addition, Tesla also mentioned that incentives are available and that a $500 rebate is now accessible. However, customers can only receive the said rebate if they had their Powerwall installations before 10/31 in the US or other eligible US territories.

Indeed, the Tesla Powerwall plays a crucial role in facilitating the transition to sustainable energy. It effectively integrates renewable energy sources, particularly solar power, into the electrical grid. In effect, it ensures a consistent and reliable energy supply.
