Tesla has achieved a new major milestone in its gigafactory in Nevada in the United States. According to the official announcement, Giga Nevada successfully produced a whopping 5 million drive units on Wednesday.
Giga Nevada hits 5 millionth drive unit mark
Tesla Manufacturing proudly announced on social media platform X that the Giga Nevada crossed the 5 million drive units production threshold on June 5.
As you can see in the X post above, the Giga Nevada team is celebrating a significant production milestone with some drive units they produced in the factory.
Drive units, commonly known as powertrains or propulsion systems, convert electricity stored in the battery into mechanical energy that ultimately spins the wheels.
Ex-Tesla executive Rohan Patel congratulated Tesla on X and noted the remarkable advancement in the electric vehicle giant’s production efforts.
Role of Giga Nevada in Tesla’s EV push
The Giga Nevada is often overshadowed by other Tesla factories in terms of electric vehicle assembly, as it currently does not produce any Tesla cars.
Nonetheless, it plays a crucial role in Tesla’s EV push by cranking out batteries and drive units.
Giga Nevada produces key components to support the manufacturing of the brand’s most popular offerings in the US market: the Tesla Model 3 sedan and the Tesla Model Y crossover.
Simply put, the Fremont Factory significantly relies on Giga Nevada for the battery and drive unit supplies.
“Located less than an hour from Lake Tahoe, Gigafactory Nevada is one of the world’s highest volume plants for electric motors, energy storage products, vehicle powertrains and batteries—producing billions of cells per year.”

Giga Nevada expansion
The Musk-led electric automaker announced plans to boost its investment in Giga Nevada with an additional $3.6 billion to further expand its production capabilities.
The announced investment will fund the addition of 3,000 new factory workers and result in two new major operations, including one for the production of 4680 battery cells and the manufacturing of the Tesla Semi electric truck series.
Giga Nevada’s 4680 battery cell production is expected to yield an annual output of 100 GWh.
That said, the 5 million drive units production milestone highlights Tesla’s strong commitment to innovations in the electric vehicle industry. It also demonstrates its intensified push to boost production capacity to meet the anticipated increase in EV demand in the global market in the coming years.
