Leading American automaker Tesla will soon open a portion of its Supercharger network to non-Tesla electric vehicles in Canada.

Notably, the move is part of a new initiative to boost EV chargers accessibility in the country.

According to the press release, Tesla will test an open Supercharging route between Sudbury and Ottawa later this year. After that, the company will open 750 Supercharging stations for non-Tesla EVs throughout Canada by the end of 2025.

“As part of this collaborative effort, Tesla will open a portion of its existing Canadian Supercharger network to non-Tesla electric vehicles, wherever site hosts allow. Later this year, an open Supercharging route will be piloted for EV drivers between Sudbury and Ottawa. Then, by the end of 2025, 750 charging connectors in public locations will be made available to non-Tesla EV drivers, through a combination of retrofits and new construction, of which at least 350 will be 250kW Superchargers. The open chargers will be distributed across Canada, and the route will include the Trans-Canada Highway from Ottawa to Calgary.”

As mentioned, the 750 Supercharging stations will consist of at least 350 250kW units. Tesla will strategically open the Superchargers to non-Tesla EVs Trans-Canada Highway route from Ottawa to Calgary.

Tesla Superchargers’ footprint

The Musk-led automaker currently runs the most robust EV charging network worldwide, predominantly for Tesla cars.

However, Tesla started opening the Supercharger network for non-Tesla EVs as part of its European pilot program a few years ago. After that, the automaker expanded the pilot program to other continents, reaching North America in early 2023.

In fact, Tesla shared some of its US Supercharger network with non-Tesla EVs as it aims to qualify for a portion of the $7.5 billion funds from the government under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Act.

Now, Tesla is set to dominate the EV charging industry in Canada by opening its 750 Superchargers by the end of 2025.

Non-Tesla EV drivers will now experience convenient and easy charging whenever they pull into a Supercharger. However, it may also increase congestion at popular Superchargers previously only accessible to Tesla owners.
