Tesla may have spilled design drawings for its forthcoming new electric compact car as part of a new corporate video.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced a $25,000 electric vehicle at Tesla Battery Day in 2020.
The CEO stated in the announcement:
Tesla will make a compelling $25,000 electric vehicle that is also fully autonomous
Elon Musk stated on his announcement
A Chinese-style EV
He clarified that this new price point results from Tesla’s new battery cell and production effort, which could minimize battery costs by more than 50%.
The $25,000 Tesla electric car, also known as the “Tesla Model 2,” has been compared to a new electric hatchback that Tesla plans to produce at Gigafactory Shanghai in China and export worldwide.
Tesla revealed plans to open a new R&D center in China in 2020 to develop “a Chinese-style” electric vehicle.
Tesla began accepting design proposals for its Chinese-made small electric car that summer and, shortly after, began hiring for the program.
The carmaker also launched this early design drawing of a small electric hatchback.
Many people assumed this was the design direction and form factor Tesla aimed for with its upcoming electric vehicle.
Tesla to release next-gen vehicle platform
As Tesla prepares to unveil its next-generation vehicle platform at its Investor Day next week, there have been numerous rumors about the automaker possibly revealing the first vehicle on this new platform, which could be this less expensive electric hatchback.
People on social media have noticed new design drawings as part of a corporate video posted by Tesla yesterday for the opening of its unique engineering headquarters.
Some Tesla enthusiasts think the $25,000 car Musk mentioned might be depicted in those drawings because it looks like a more compact Tesla.
