Leading American automaker Tesla seems to take its Gigafactory Texas development efforts to the next level. Another filing revealed that it has applied for a $59 million diecast shop at the facility just after its filing of $700 million for new facilities, Teslarati reports.
Gigafactory Texas
The Giga Texas apparently nears the production of the highly awaited Tesla Cybertruck. Its chief designer Franz von Holzhausen has shared some details on the Ride the Lightning podcast, confirming that the production target for the Cybertruck is by mid-2023.
Furthermore, we recently reported on Tesla’s $700 million worth of filing for new facilities in the Giga Texas with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. Now, the electric automaker has applied for a new “Die Shop” at Gigafactory Texas.
What is a “die” shop?
Interestingly, “die” virtually means diecasting, which has multiple uses.
Auto diecasting has three subcategories: stamping, plastics, and casting. Tesla is actively employing for all three of these positions at several sites, including Giga Texas.
What is known so far?
Tesla will erect the new facility near the eventual Cathode Building, as per the report citing Giga Texas drone operator Joe Tegtmeyer.
The Die shop will reportedly measure just more than 107,000 square feet.
In its application, Tesla stated that development would start on January 30. Still, it must be noted that some of its structures are already undergoing construction.
Moreover, the automaker expects the project to finish on February 19, 2024.
All that said, it is possible that Tesla intends to use the on-site die shop to create the dies that will go inside the IDRA Giga Press machines.
The report notes that IDRA’s newly delivered 9,000-ton Giga Press to Giga Texas is now being assembled.
For what?
Interestingly, the die shop filing may indicate Tesla’s effort to cut out a step in the production process that might subsequently cause production delays. After all, there is a large volume of orders for the electric pickup truck.
As stated, the Cybertruch design is almost complete and ready for production. It would be exciting to see these innovative electric pickup trucks swamp the roads this year.
