Germany records a 19.2% year-on-year to 246,966 units in its new passenger car registration in May as electric vehicle sales boom, KBA data shows.
New commercial car registrations grew 28.7% YoY, while private car registrations were up 2.7% YoY.

Passenger car sales, BEV sales grew 47% YoY
Of the 246,966-unit total for passenger car registrations, battery electric vehicles accounted for 17.3% of the market. That share indicates a YoY sales increase of 47%, substantially recovering from a 13% decline in January due to lowered EV subsidies.
However, the report noted that gasoline-powered cars remained Germany’s top-selling powertrain type in May. It recorded a YoY sales growth of 18% and a 35.5% market share.
On the other hand, diesel-based cars accounted for 17.6% of the market, with a sales growth of 3.6%.
Top car brands in May
In terms of imported car brands, leading American automaker Tesla dominated the German auto industry in May with sales of 5,265 units, a 1,696.9% YoY sales growth.
Alfa Romeo followed it with an astounding YoY sales increase of 169.5%, while MG recorded a 117.6% growth.
As for the German brands, BMW sales recorded a remarkable YoY growth of 60.2%. Mercedes-Benz sales grew 55.0% YoY. Meanwhile, the country’s leading brand Volkswagen recorded a YoY sales increase of 13%.

All that stated, Germany’s auto sales grew 10% to approximately 1.11 million units in the fifth month of the year.
