Tesla CEO Elon Musk has long acknowledged the need to address the company’s delivery wave issue, particularly in regions lacking Gigafactories.

For context, Tesla usually experiences a surge in electric vehicle deliveries (sales) during the third month of each quarter, resulting in uneven sales patterns.

However, the recent ramp-up in production at Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg in Germany has aided the company in achieving a more balanced distribution of deliveries throughout the quarter in Europe.

Implications

Tesla sales tracker Troy Teslike shared valuable insights to provide a better understanding of the situation and avoid misconceptions.

In Europe, supply in months 1 and 2 of the quarter used to be low. Therefore sales were low. As supply increased, sales in month 1+2 started to represent a larger percentage of the quarter.

Troy highlighted the changes in European sales in a recent Twitter post.

“In Europe, supply in months 1 and 2 of the quarter used to be low. Therefore sales were low. As supply increased, sales in month 1+2 started to represent a larger percentage of the quarter. This trend will increase sharply in Q2. I expect Apr+May to represent around 50% of Q2.”

In a subsequent update on June 21, Troy elaborated that the third month of the quarter would see lower sales figures than before, even if Tesla maintains the same number of sales from one quarter to another. It reasoned the fact that Tesla will have fulfilled a greater portion of its quarter’s sales and deliveries during the first and second quarters.

The reality is more complicated. Here is what actually happened in the last 4 quarters in Europe:

The first two months accounted for only 11% of sales in Q2 2022, then 23% in Q3, and 40% in Q4.

Troy’s cautionary note warns against drawing excessively bullish judgments based on strong sales in the first two months of the quarter.

Recognizing that the year-over-year sales increase in the third month is unlikely to match the same magnitude in the first two months of the quarter is crucial. Likewise, if sales decline compared to the previous year during the third month of a quarter, it should not be cause for alarm.

Notably, this phenomenon reflects Tesla’s deliberate efforts to address the delivery wave issue.

As Tesla works towards achieving a more balanced distribution of deliveries throughout each quarter, observers and investors need to interpret sales figures within the appropriate context. The ongoing changes in sales patterns result from Tesla’s strategic adjustments and should not be misconstrued as a drastic change in overall sales performance.
