Production milestone records

Tesla produced its first millionth 4680 battery cell in January 2022. The company only took 16 months to reach 10 million 4680 battery cell production from its first million. At that time, Giga Texas was producing approximately 562,500 cells every month.

After four months, Tesla managed to ramp up production from 10 million to 20 million 4680 battery cells. The monthly production rate increased to 2.5 million cells, indicating a significant increase.

Tesla North estimates Tesla to hit its 30 millionth production milestone of 4680 battery cells by February 2024, considering its current monthly rate of 2.5 million cells.

Tesla just produced its 20 millionth 4680 battery cell, but many are missing the growth behind these numbers.

What’s special about 4680 battery cells?

Tesla initially introduced the groundbreaking 4680 battery cells at Battery Day in 2020.

Tesla claims that this new battery cell technology can cut production costs by more than 50%, owing to its simple design.

Tesla’s 4680 battery cell is expected to offer a capacity of approximately 26 Ah. However, the automaker has yet to confirm this detail.

It is worth noting that 20 million 4680 battery cells can support the production of 24,000 Tesla Model Ys, according to Teslarati.

Purpose

Tesla uses the 4680 battery cell for the Model Y’s structural battery packs, which also undergo production at Giga Texas.

The industry also expects the automaker to use these innovative battery cells for the battery packs of the upcoming Cybertruck.

Tesla aims to employ the 4680 battery cells for its longer-range models and vehicles that need more power for utility.

Tesla aims to gradually ramp up production of 4680 battery cells to more than 100 GWh per year at Gigafactory Texas. However, the automaker still needs to further accelerate its large-scale volume production to hit that target.
