Partnership details

Tata Motors officially announced in a press release on Thursday the new partnership it formed with Shell India Markets Private Limited (SIMPL) to expand the electric vehicle charging infrastructure in India.

TPEM and SIMPL formally inked a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to co-develop public charging stations throughout the country.

As per the announcement, the two companies plan to leverage the local electric automaker’s data from more than 400,000 Tata electric vehicles

and Shell’s enormous fuel station network in India to build EV chargers at strategic locations where Tata owners mostly visit.

Improving EV charging experience

TPEM and SIMPL’s partnership primarily aims to boost electric vehicle adoption by improving the charging experience of electric vehicle owners throughout India.

In order to do that, the two major companies aim to come up with new convenient payment systems and loyalty programs to add substantial value to TPEM’s buyers.

TPEM’s Chief Strategy Officer expressed his delight with the new partnership with Shell.

“Through this partnership, we aim to grow the existing charging infrastructure, which is crucial for mainstream adoption of EVs in the country, particularly as the customer base continues to expand.”

Balaje Rajan, Chief Strategy Officer of TPEM and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles

Advantage

TPEM currently leads the Indian electric passenger vehicle market with a share of 71% owing to its four offerings, the Tiago.EV, the Tigor.EV, the Punch.EV and the Nexon.EV.

Its inaugural EV-only store in Gurugram and its partnership with different charge point operators played a significant role in boosting the country’s electric vehicle ecosystem.

On the other hand, Shell EV Recharge sites offer reliable and ultra-fast charging. It boasts a remarkable 98%-99% charger uptime. Moreover, these charging sites also have convenient retail, such as fresh food and beverage products.

“Our dedication to using 100% certified renewable sources combined with our ultra-fast and reliable chargers ensures that our customers enjoy a sustainable, hassle free and efficient charging experience. Our strategic partnership with Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd aims to promote the widespread adoption of electric vehicles in the country by leveraging digital integration and customer-centric initiatives.”

Sanjay Varkey, Director of SIMP

Sufficient and reliable charging infrastructures are crucial to encourage people to adopt electric vehicles and ditch their gas-powered cars. Therefore, TPEM and SIMP’s partnership for electric vehicle charging network development will undoubtedly boost India’s shift to clean mobility. It can also help TPEM prepare for Tesla’s imminent arrival in the country with its Supercharging network and innovative EVs.
