Geely-owned brand Volvo cars is set to debut at least six new all-electric vehicles until 2026, Reuters reports citing two trusted sources familiar with the matter.
The report noted that the lineup would include the electrification of its existing three SUVs and two sedans and the launch of a new premium electric van. Remarkably, the plans signify the brand’s greatest portfolio revamp since Geely’s takeover from Ford in 2010.
Proposed EV portfolio
The electric MPV or van will be significantly influenced by Geely’s Chinese brand Zeekr 009. As per the report, the starting price of the EV is 500,000 yuan ($74,179) in the Chinese market.
It has three rows of seating, designed to rival business/family vans like Toyota Alphard. Remarkably, the Zeekr 009 features passenger seats resembling those in business class airplanes. These vans have gained traction as an alternative to limos in Asian markets like China and Japan.
Given that the upcoming MPV will be sold in China, it will have a more “emotional” aesthetic, inspired by the Zeekr 009, per one of the sources.
Another BEV under the proposed portfolio is the EX90, which Volvo revealed in late 2022. It will be available in Volvo’s showrooms in early 2024. On the other hand, the electric counterpart of the automaker’s main portfolio is also planned. It includes the XC90, XC60, and XC40 crossovers and the S60 and S90 sedans, per the sources who asked not to be named.
Interestingly, one of the sources noted that these electric counterparts of Volvo’s mainline cars will have the brand’s traditional “simple design cues.”
Notably, Volvo aims to electrify 100% of its lineup by 2030, with its Australian unit set to only market EVs by 2026. Since the acquisition, Geely has offered Volvo its innovative technologies, including its platforms.
Volvo’s electrification targets will undoubtedly be boosted with this major product revamp. It would not be surprising if the automaker would actually succeed in its endeavor, given the full support of its parent company.
