Swansea Council has deployed new electric vehicle charge points at 13 council-owned parking lots across the city as it aims to achieve its net-zero emission target by 2030, as reported by W247.

“Swansea Council has a commitment to be a net zero carbon council by 2030 and for the city as a whole to achieve that target by 2050. The new crop of EV charge points are the latest step in the right direction and it’s our plan to increase their numbers over the coming years. This is just the start.”

Andrea Lewis, Deputy Leader and Cabinet member for Service Transformation

Notably, all the charging stations are fast chargers capable of providing 7 to 22 kWh from 100% renewable sources.

Purpose of the project

The installation of additional charge points across Swansea city is expected to aid EV owners and further promote EV adoption.

Who is involved in the project?

Notably, the UK and Wales EV charging network Clenergy EV operates the charge points on behalf of the city authority.

“We are delighted to continue to support the City of Swansea Council’s charge point rollout. The first set of charge points have already provided 270,000 zero-emission miles to EV drivers in the area since 2020.That number will only increase as more and more Swansea residents start switching to cleaner modes of transport.”

On the other hand, the project was funded by the Welsh Government through its Ultra Low Emission Vehicle Transformation Fund.

Where were the EV charge points erected?

Swansea initially had just 32 charge points. With the recent addition, the city’s total EV charging infrastructure is now 80 units across 25 council-owned parking lots.

Notably, these charge points were strategically built on public spaces like the council parking lots to make them more accessible to every EV driver in the city.

“The newly-installed charge points have been chosen following discussions with ward members and other groups and organisations. They are specifically located for convenience for day-trippers and people shopping in local communities. The utility company have now connected all the charge points to the mains and they will give many years’ service to our communities.”

Andrea Lewis, Deputy Leader and Cabinet member for Service Transformation

Notably, ten of these charging points are installed at the new Bae Copr Bay De/South parking garage beneath Swansea Arena. On the other hand, the Bracelet Bay parking lot and The Dairy parking lot in Mumbles are already preparing for the new network to go operational.

Swansea Council has been pushing to support the push for electric vehicles. Along with establishing multiple charging sites, it also boasts Wales’ largest public fleet of 60 EVs. In order to fully transition from ICE to sustainable vehicles, it plans to add 25 more EVs in the years ahead.
