Partnership details

Stellantis and CEA signed a new five-year alliance that will focus on the “in-house design” of innovative electric vehicle battery cells.

It is basically a joint research program revolving around the development of cutting-edge battery cells with the following key characteristics:

  • higher performance
  • a longer lifespan
  • a lower carbon footprint
  • competitive costs

This partnership primarily seeks to pave the way for lower-cost and more sustainable electric vehicle models in the market.

They will also explore research prospects in the following areas:

  • disruptive chemistries and CO2 footprint
  • battery modeling
  • fuel cell development
  • life cycle assessment
  • connectivity

“We believe that this collaboration will accelerate the arrival of disruptive battery cell technology, supporting our mission to offer clean, safe and affordable mobility to our customers.”

Leveraging CEA’s 25 years of battery expertise

This newly formed partnership will leverage CEA’s over 25 years of knowledge and expertise in li-ion battery research and development.

CEA’s Energy Division offers advanced solutions for decarbonization, aiming to provide market differentiation and a competitive edge for its partners.

“CEA is proud to support Stellantis with an ambitious multi-year R&D program on battery cells, which takes place in the frame of CEA/Stellantis global partnership. This exciting project makes the best use of more than 25 years of expertise in the field of Li-ion batteries at CEA to the benefit of one of the major automotive actors in the competitive race for electrical mobility.”

Philippe Stohr, CEA Energy Division Head

All that said, Stellantis and CEA primarily aim to develop cheaper, next-gen electric vehicle batteries featuring industry-leading technologies for Stellantis and its joint venture factories. This partnership will aid Stellantis in accomplishing its Dare Forward 2030 strategy. Remarkably, it expects to achieve carbon neutrality across its global operations by 2038.
