Multinational automaker Stellantis announced plans to produce its upcoming electric Dodge Charger at its Windsor Assembly Plant in Ontario, Canada.
The new electric vehicle model will apparently usher in the launch of the brand’s next-gen muscle cars, The Canadian Press reports (via BNN Bloomberg).
Factory expansion
The Windsor Assembly Plant in Ontario only currently produces hybrid and gas-powered Stellantis vehicles, including the Pacifica minivan.
In November 2023, Stellantis reportedly announced its plans to install new electric battery production capacity in the existing Windsor Assembly Plant.
The move is crucial to the three-year collective agreement Stellantis inked with Unifor.
“In November 2023, the Company confirmed plans for WAP. In addition to the continuing production of the current Pacifica, including the plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV), AWD and ICE models, it was transformed to install an all-new flexible STLA Large architecture (including PHEV and battery electric (BEV) capability) to produce the next generation Dodge muscle cars.”
Stellantis stated in a press release
The union demanded Stellantis’ commitment to local electric vehicle production before agreeing to the proposal, supposedly reviving a three-shift factory operation. The company’s estimated investment in the plant was $1.89 billion then.
Now, Stellantis plans to produce the two-door coupe versions of the electric Charger in the factory in mid-2024. Meanwhile, gas-powered versions will kick off in 2025.
About the factory
Stellantis’ Windsor Assembly Plant is a 4.4 million square feet facility built in 1928 in Ontario, Canada.
It currently produces various hybrid and gas-powered vehicles, including the Chrysler Pacifica (Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid), Chrysler Voyager, and Chrysler Grand Caravan (Canadian market only).
According to Stellantis, it currently has 3,568 employees on two shifts.
In November 2023, Stellantis confirmed plans to install additional BEV capability to build the next-generation Dodge muscle cars.
Upcoming Dodge Charger EV
Dodge recently teased the new electric Charger muscle car ahead of its official launch in 2024.
The teaser photo resembles the Dodge Charger Daytona SRT “Banshee” concept car introduced in 2022.
The model’s front badge features the iconic Fratzog logo with strong illumination. It also maintained the concept car’s signature light bar.
These efforts are crucial for Stellantis’ strategy to reach its goal of reducing its global carbon footprint by 50% by 2030, potentially enabling it to hit carbon neutrality by 2038.
We can expect to learn more about the Dodge Charger EV on and near its official launch in late 2024.
