Spain registered 100,748 new cars in March, representing a year-on-year growth of 65%. For the entire first quarter of 2023, the country’s new car registrations grew 43% YoY to 240,648 units.
Moreover, Spain reported record-breaking results in its new plug-in car sales last month.
New passenger plug-in car registrations – March 2023
Spain enjoyed a significant YoY growth of 63.5% in its plug-in electric car sales in March, reaching a record-breaking result of 10,666 units, EnergyTransition Fan reports. Notably, that figure marks the country’s first five-digit sales in history, with a stable market share of 10.6%.
Meanwhile, plug-in hybrids remain dominant in the Spanish auto market over battery electric vehicles.

New passenger plug-in car registrations – YTD
Spain reported over 26,500 new passenger plug-in electric car registrations, up 47% YoY. Of that total, all-electric vehicles accounted for 11,607 units, up 55% YoY. Meanwhile, plug-in hybrids grew 42% YoY to 14,915 units.

Best-selling models – YTD
Tesla Model Y dominated Spain’s plug-in car market in the first quarter of 2023 with 1,621 units. Fiat 500 Electric followed it by a significant margin with 763 units. Dacia Spring landed third with 617 sales.
The top five were completed by MG4 Electric (588) and Citroën e-C4 (541).
