“We have offered a new understanding on how to overcome the electrochemical limitations of conventional anode materials.”

Research Leader Professor Won Bae Kim said in a Pohang report published by EurekAlert

Battery breakthrough details

Professor Won Bae Kim’s team employed a groundbreaking self-hybridization approach in synthesizing manganese ferrite nanosheets, which are employed as the battery anode. For those unaware, they have superior li-ion storage capacity.

The researchers replaced the traditional graphite anode with a manganese ferrite.

They enlarged the anode material’s surface area to allow for li-ions’ concurrent movement. This process enabled the batteries to support faster charging speed.

Experimental results proved that a battery with a similar capacity to those equipped in current electric vehicles could hit 100% charge in just six minutes.

“The research holds the potential to significantly increase the energy density of lithium-ion batteries through the incorporation of high-capacity anode materials, thereby extending the driving range of electric vehicles. Silicon-based anode materials could potentially increase driving range at least tenfold.”

Professor Soojin Park

Advantages

Study Finds indicated that charging EV batteries can take up to 10 hours to hit 100% State of Charge (SOC).

Now, this new battery breakthrough claims to be capable of reducing that charging time to just 6 minutes.

Therefore, this new battery technology enables EV owners to avoid parking for extended periods to replenish their batteries.

It essentially advances the EV charging experience to match the typical gas station’s refueling process for conventional vehicles.

Despite the significant charging time reduction, the team ensured that the battery packs’ size and weight would not increase to allow for competitive acceleration.

An article published on LinkedIn indicated that their average weight is just about 1,000 pounds.

Pohang University of Science and Technology’s battery breakthrough can significantly accelerate the electric vehicle industry’s wider adoption. It can enable faster and easier charging time that allows EV owners to avoid taking too much time to recharge their batteries, which is among the top impediments to e-mobility uptake.
