General Motors and its Chinese partners SAIC and Wuling have just unveiled a new compact electric vehicle model under their Baojun brand.

The Baojun Yunduo EV is an affordable EV that only costs RMB 95,800 ($ 13,000). It is set to compete with the popular BYD Dolphin and VW ID.3.

What’s currently known about the Baojun Yunduo EV?

CnEVPost reported that the Baojun Yunduo signifies the second EV model from the brand after the Yep EV so far this year.

It is also interesting to note that “Yunduo” literally translates to “cloud.” The model has four variants with the following base price:

  • RMB 95,800  (USD 13,157)
  • RMB 103,800 (USD 14256)
  • RMB 115,800 (USD 15794)
  • RMB 123,800  (USD 17000)

However, the brand has yet to reveal the name and specs differences of these trims.

As for the dimensions, the Baojun Yunduo is 4,295 mm long, 1,850 mm wide, and 1,652 mm tall. Meanwhile, its wheelbase measures 2,700 mm.

Moreover, it has a maximum output of 100kW and 200Nm torque. It will reportedly utilize a lithium iron phosphate battery with 37.9kWh and 50.6kWh output. These battery capacities enable a CLTC-estimated driving range of 360km and 460km, respectively.

One model version will reportedly feature the Lingxi smart driving system co-developed by the SGMW joint venture and drone manufacturer DJI. The company began accepting pre-orders for this version yesterday. Meanwhile, it aims to begin customer delivery in October.

Baojun also disclosed that it has already collected more than 5,000 pre-orders on launch night.

Launching a new low-priced EV will undoubtedly aid SGMW to remain competitive in the electric vehicle industry. It will offer Chinese customers additional choices as they shift to clean-energy vehicles. The EV’s compact size is also ideal for traveling on the country’s congested roads.

While Musk clowns around on/at X, GM partner SAIC-Wuling launched yet another affordable EV in China last week, forcing Tesla to slash prices yet again to shore up slumping demand for the aging Models 3 and Y.
