Porsche and Tesla have created some competition between the Taycan and Model S Plaid. According to a new report, the German automaker is looking to take it to a new level with a tri-motor Taycan to compete with the Tesla Model S Plaid, as per Electrek.

Porsche Tycan & Tesla Model S Plaid

After Porsche brought its brand-new Taycan electric vehicle to the Nürburgring racetrack to beat a record in 2019, Tesla CEO Elon Musk made the decision to use the proving grounds for the electric manufacturer’s latest performance vehicle.

Tesla began testing early Model S Plaid prototypes at the track and carried off some great lap times. However, the vehicle was delayed and only launched two years later.

In 2021, Tesla brought its then-brand-new Model S Plaid to the Nürburgring racetrack and topped Porsche’s record with a groundbreaking 7:35.579 lap.

It seems that it built some rivalry between the two automakers, specifically between the two flagship sedans.

Early this year, Porsche brought a Taycan back to the Nürburgring track and beat Tesla’s Model S Plaid by two seconds to claim the fastest lap record of a production series electric car.

However, it is not without a dispute since the manufacturer used a Taycan with a new “performance kit” that’s “only available in Germany and only for the 2023 model year Taycan Turbo S sports sedan.”

Taycan with a New Tri-motor Configuration

In addition, according to a new report from UK’s Auto Express, Porsche is testing a new Taycan with a tri-motor configuration – like the Tesla Model S Plaid:

“The Taycan range kicks off with the entry-level rear-wheel drive version, and the new tri-motor variant should supersede the Turbo S as the fastest model available. Given the upgrades, we predict a slight increase over the Taycan’s £75,500 starting price, with the upcoming flagship costing well in excess of the £142,400 Turbo S.”

This version could make a record in terms of performance. It will launch with design changes and possibly some tweaks to improve performance and range. Additionally, software changes are likely to the Taycan’s triple-display infotainment set-up.

It is not clear when the new tri-motor version of the Taycan will reach the market, but it will be interesting to know if it drives the American automaker to have a response when it does.
