Norway reported a year-on-year sales growth of 19.3% in its passenger car market in March 2023, reaching 19,366 units.

Moreover, the Norwegian plug-in electric car market finally enjoyed an 18% YoY growth after two months of sales decline.

The country’s new passenger plug-in car registrations hit 17,648 units (up 18% YoY), dominating 91.1% of the market, per Norwegian Road Federation (OFV).

Of that total, battery-electric vehicles contributed a whopping 86.8% market share with sales of 16,811 units. On the other hand, plug-in hybrids continue to decline for their 15th consecutive month, recording their lowest market share since September 2015.

New passenger plug-in car registrations in Norway – YTD

Norway had over 25,000 new passenger plug-in electric car registrations this year to date, indicating a YoY decline of 12%.

For comparison, there were over 153,000 new plug-in electric car registrations in FY 2022, indicating a YoY increase of 0.8% YoY.

Top-selling models in March

The Tesla Model Y had 7,442 units registered in March, more than any other vehicle regardless of powertrain. It held a whopping 38.4% of the overall market that month.

This remarkable outcome boosted Model Y’s YTD sales lead to 8,714 units, with a 30.4% market share.

The all-new Toyota bZ4X (1,076) and the Volvo XC40 Recharge (933) trailed behind the Model Y, landing second and third, respectively.

The siblings Volkswagen ID.4 (675) and Volkswagen ID.3 (603) completed the top five.
