Numerous spy shots of the new Tesla Model 3 Performance have continuously emerged online ahead of the official launch. Now, the biggest preview of all seems to have finally arrived: an uncamouflaged version of the electric sedan from a private Tesla preview event in Malibu.

Tesla to replace the Performance with “Ludicrous” moniker

Previous reports suggest that Tesla would keep the “Performance” badge in the Tesla Model 3’s top-tier variant. However, new reports increasingly expect the Musk-led company to use “Ludicrous” instead, according to Drive. It is apparently influenced by the 1987 movie Spaceballs, which Tesla CEO Elon Musk is a fan of.

The spy shots that emerged on social media starting Tuesday include red, blue, black, and grey examples of the Tesla Model 3 Performance or Ludicrous. They feature Texas manufacturer license plates.

Exterior features

Tesla Model 3’s flagship edition now comes with a distinctive front and rear bumpers. It also features a new front splitter apart from the carbon-fiber lip spoiler.

Moreover, it has red brake calipers and 20″ wheels with a ‘Warp’ design with aero inserts. The boot lid carries the new Ludicrous badge. The design simulates the pattern in the 1987 movie Spaceballs when the spaceship hits “Ludicrous Speed,” which claims to be faster than light.

Expected technical specs

Overseas reports expect the new Model 3 Performance/Ludicrous to yield up to a theoretical 461kW. It includes the front motor’s output of 158kW and the rear motor’s 303kW. However, both motors can apparently generate peak power at a different rpm.

New rear motor on the new Model 3 Performance/Ludicrous labeled as 4D2, with up to 303kW (or 406 horsepower).
This will be paired with the same front motor as before, 3D3, which has 158kW (or 212 horsepower), for a combined power output of 461kW (or 618 horsepower).

For reference, the original Performance variant boasts a theoretical power output of 357kW-393kW, depending on the referenced certification documents from the government. Tesla does not usually reveal the power outputs of its electric vehicles.

In addition, the new variant can reportedly accelerate from 0 to 60mph (97km/h) in 2.9 seconds, a notable decline from the original 3.2 seconds.

Previous previews also revealed plans for adaptive suspension, a first for the all-electric Tesla sedan. It also comes with upgraded front sports seats with tighter bolsters than regular models.

Tesla is expected to officially introduce the new 2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance/Ludicrous in the coming days as it seeks to bolster its electric vehicle sales amid a market slowdown.
