California-based electric bike company Luna Cycle finally debuted its new Talaria Sting R MX4. Despite its similarities with the Sur-Ron electric motorbike, the company claims that the Talaria Sting R MX4 offers 50% more power.
Sur-Ron vs. Talaria
The moniker “Sur-Ron” has long been used to refer to exciting small-format off-road electric motorbikes, per Electrek.
Undoubtedly, the Sur-Ron X has provided the fun of a dirt bike in a vehicle almost the same size and weight as an electric bicycle (and almost as easy to ride).
However, industry newcomer Talaria is now challenging the Sur-Ron X with its 50% power advantage. Indeed, it will offer some fierce competition in the market.
Talaria Sting R MX4’s advantage over Sur-Ron X
The new Talaria Sting R MX4 boasts a maximum horsepower of 7.39, per Luna Cycle’s dyno. It indicates a significant advantage over Sur-Ron X’s 4.8 hp.
The Talaria Sting R MX4 has also been designed to meet certain standards absent in Sur-Ron. Luna Cycle asserted a few years ago that some of its components, such as the brakes and other systems, must be upgraded to manage greater speed riding.
Apparently, Luna Cycle now claims that the Talaria factory worked to fill those gaps. The Talaria Sting R MX4 is standardly equipped with 230mm brake rotors. It also boasts four regenerative braking levels and an upgraded IPM motor with a magnetic encoder. Apart from that, it also has a 2.7 kWh battery.
The report noted the Talaria Sting R MX4 uses a gearbox as opposed to a Sur-Ron’s belt-reduction transmission. With this gearbox, the bike’s oil must be changed every 5,000 km (3,000 miles). Yet, it does away with the inconvenience of changing worn-out or damaged belts in a belt-reduction transmission.
Furthermore, a speed-limiting feature is included with the Talaria Sting R MX4. Meanwhile, the top speed of 52 mph (84 km/h) can be accessed with a pair of wire cutters. It increases somewhat above the top speed of the Sur-Ron X, which is 46 mph (75 km/h).
With a price of $4,500, the Talaria is only slightly more expensive than the $4,350 Sur-Ron X, per the company’s online configurator.
Yet it’s clear how the Talaria team set their eyes on beating Sur-Ron X with its over 20% more battery and 50% more power.
