The Netherlands saw a decline in passenger car sales in December and the entire year of 2022. On the other hand, demand for electric vehicles steadily grows with high sales levels, as per InsideEVs.
Plug-in electric car sales in the Netherlands – December 2022
EV Volumes’ data revealed (via Jose Pontes) that the Netherlands saw a year-on-year plug-in car sales decline of 32% to 15,757 registrations in December.
Notably, 51% of the total volume was composed of rechargeable cars. Even though it declined from December 2021’s record of 65%, this year’s result is still remarkable.
December 2022 saw all-electric cars succeed with a 44% market share and approximately 13,600 registrations.

The Netherlands reported over 107,000 new plug-in electric passenger car registrations in 2022. With approximately 95,000 units in 2021, last year’s result represents a YoY growth of 12%.
Meanwhile, the market share of plug-in electric passenger cars grew to 35% in 2022 from just 30% in 2021.

Tesla Model Y dominated Netherlands’ plug-in car market with 2,296 registrations in December 2022. Apart from that, it also led the overall auto market in the country.
Meanwhile, the following Volkswagen electric cars completed the top 6: Audi Q4 e-tron, Cupra Born, Audi e-tron, Volkswagen ID.5, and Volkswagen ID.4.
