Netherlands: Plug-in car sales grew 25% in January 2023

Netherlands’ overall car sales reported a year-on-year increase of 7% in January 2023 amid the country’s progressive electric car adoption. Remarkably, Chinese automaker Lynk & Co continues to dominate the plug-in car market in the country.

Jose Pontes revealed, citing EV Volumes data, that the new plug-in car registrations in the Netherlands reached 8,900 units last month. Notably, that figure represents a year-on-year growth of 25%, the country’s best January to date. In addition, the plug-in car market shares reported a YoY increase of 27% from 23%.

Most notably, all-electric car registrations accounted for 15% of the market, with more than 5,000 new registrations in January (up 62% YoY).

On the other hand, plug-in hybrid registrations reported a minimal decline of 4% YoY. Nonetheless, it still held 12% of the overall volume last month.

Plug-in electric car sales in the Netherlands – 2022

In hindsight, the Netherlands reported a YoY registrations growth of about 12% to 107,562 units in 2022 from 2021’s record of 95,000 units. Notably, that figure represents an increase in its market share to 35% from 30% a year before.

Top models

The Lynk & Co 01 PHEV continued to dominate the plug-in car market with 796 new registrations last month. The Volvo XC40 (BEV + PHEV) followed it with 522 units, and Tesla Model Y with 492 units.

The top five are completed by Peugeot models: Peugeot e-208 (256) and Peugeot e-2008 (240).

As you can see, the Dacia Spring and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 delivered similar sales, which is 185 units.

Top brands

As for the brands, Volvo dominated the ranking with an 11% market share. BMW closely followed it with a 10.5% share.

The top five were completed by Lynk & Co (8.9%), Mercedes-Benz (7.4%), and Tesla (6.6%).

Meanwhile, Peugeot landed 6th place with a 6.5% market share, followed by Renault with 5.9%.
