Sales of passenger cars in the Netherlands surpassed the plug-in car segment again with a year-on-year growth of 2% to around 28,000 units, as per InsideEVs.
Notably, new plug-in cars held 35% of the overall registrations to 9,764 units in November, based on EV Volumes’ data via Jose Pontes. That number represents a decrease of about 8% from a year earlier.
That said, the number of plug-in and all-electric vehicles sold decreased moderately from the previous year. However, it is important to remember that adjustments in tax incentives frequently augment solid performance in the last few months of the year.
New plug-in car registrations:
- BEVs: 6,944 (down 9%) and 25% share
- PHEVs: 2,820 (down 6%) and 10% share
- Total: 9,764 (down 8%) and 35% share

New plug-in electric car registrations have held 33% of the overall auto market to 91,000 units this year to date. It represents a remarkable YoY growth of 27%.
- BEVs: about *58,500 and 21% share
- PHEVs: about *33,500 and 12% share
- Total: 91,989 and 33% share
* estimated from the market share
All these data considered, the Netherlands can hit a record of 100,000 plug-in car sales in a year. In retrospect, there were only 95,000 plug-in car registrations the previous year.

The following models complete the top 5: Skoda Enyaq iV (521), Volvo XC40 Recharge (479) and Peugeot e-208 (371), and BMW i4 – 307.

Meanwhile, the automotive group ranking features Volkswagen Group at the top spot with a 20.4% market share. The top five spots are filled by the following: Stellantis (17.2%), Geely-Volvo (including Lynk & Co and Polestar) at 17.1%, Hyundai-Kia (12.7%), and BMW Group (10.9%).
Nonetheless, the reported 8% decline in Netherlands’ plug-in car registrations in November 2022 is only minimal compared to its enormous potential growth by the end of the year and especially for the quarters to come. It would also be interesting to see how these models would fare this month, marking the end of their 2022 performance.
