Myanmar is launching a one-year electric vehicle pilot project from January 1 to December 31 after importing 40 Chinese-made electric cars last month.
Ten of the imported Chinese BYD e2 cars will be used as electric taxis in Yangon. Another ten will be used as taxis in Nay Pyi Daw, according to Sai Kyaw Naing Oo, chairman of a working committee on electric vehicle development, on Saturday.
Notably, Myanmar founded the National-level Leading Committee on the Development of Electric Vehicles and Related Business in June last year, which includes five working committees to promote its EV sector.
SEA country granted the zero-tariff for imported EV
The South-East Asian country then granted a zero-tariff regimen to imported electric vehicles beginning November 2 last year and ending March 31 this year.
According to Sai Kyaw Naing Oo, the national-level supreme council was working on transporting and manufacturing EVs in the country and constructing charging points to help the EV sector grow.
As part of the pilot project, the committee and related EV organizations organized a knowledge-sharing program on electric vehicles in the commercial city of Yangon on Saturday, inviting more than 200 participants.
