Musk pique interest in Tesla’s Robotics ambitions

On Wednesday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk declared on X that the new Optimus design will be “something special.”

More excitingly, he hinted that the next iteration of Tesla’s humanoid robot will arrive later this year.

The announcement came in response to an X post of @BasedBeffJezos, praising the American billionaire’s efforts in the Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) space.

Optimus 2.0 to arrive later this year

The new Optimus design CEO Musk recently alluded to is expected to be closer to its final appearance. However, Tesla still has some developments to achieve before the next-gen model arrives later this year.

While specific details about Optimus 2.0 remain under wraps, Tesla has already achieved a significant milestone with its first-gen humanoid bots. At least two Optimus bots are already autonomously performing tasks at one of Tesla’s EV factories.

Tesla boss’ optimism

In hindsight, CEO Elon Musk shared estimates during the Q1 2024 Earnings Call that Tesla may start offering Optimus to other companies by the end of 2025.

“We are able to do simple factory tasks or at least, I should say, factory tasks in the lab. We do think we will have Optimus in limited production in the natural factory itself, doing useful tasks before the end of this year. And then I think we may be able to sell it externally by the end of next year. These are just guesses.”

Tesla CEO Elon Musk

Most recently, CEO Musk foretold at the Annual Shareholder meeting in June 2024 that there will be at least one Optimus bot for every person in the world in the future. He further projected the total humanoid robot population to reach at least 10 billion or more, with Tesla accounting for a major portion of it.

“While autonomous vehicle is a $5-$7 trillion market cap situation, Optimus is a $25 trillion market cap situation.”

The Tesla boss also aims to sell Optimus in the $10,000-$20,000 price range once it hits mass production. All these considered, it would be interesting to see how CEO Musk can lead Tesla to achieve his ambitious goals for the Optimus project while also figuring out the full autonomy puzzle in its electric vehicles.
