MG Motor is currently developing an even cheaper and smaller electric car than the popular $40,000 MG 4, Auto Express reports, citing the British-Chinese automaker’s executive in the UK.
MG is developing a more affordable EV than its already existing offerings
MG Motor UK’s Head of Product and Planning David Allison revealed at the recent 2024 Geneva Motor Show the company’s ongoing development of an all-electric sibling to the new MG 3.
The new electric car would likely use the MG 2 moniker and may cost as low as sub-$30,000.
“I think everyone seems to be looking in that area at the moment – B-segment or just below it, around four metres in length, with that magic 20,000-euro price bracket. If anyone’s going to do that, we should be right there. There’s an absolute window of opportunity around £20,000. It’s a combination of range, size and price – and if you hit all those three, you’ll nail it.”

Development progress
Product and Planning Head Allison also revealed in response to a query during the motor shot that the cheaper electric vehicle development was already underway. MG Motor is apparently expecting to introduce the new model dubbed “MG 2” in the latter half of 2025.
“Yes. I’ve seen it already, in fact. I don’t see any reason why it shouldn’t fly. It’s probably a couple of years away, maybe 18 months, so we’re talking second half of 2025. But we’ll get there.”

Mr. Allison further confirmed that the company may use the MG 2 nameplate.
“It’ll probably get a new name but it would sit quite nicely within the existing convention. If you said MG2 then you wouldn’t be a million miles away; 2 is the next step.”

More to expect from MG
Apart from the cheaper MG 2 EV, Mr. Allison also announced that MG Motor UK is also planning to develop a sportier trim level above the already available Trophy range-topper.
It will apparently stem from the MG 3 compact electric car. However, the model would not have additional power above the 192 brake horsepower (bhp) launch model.
“At the moment our range tends to be a bit limited, with a mid grade and a high grade. What we need is something with a more sporty look and feel, but without necessarily having a boost in performance.
I think our brand would lend itself perfectly to that – something like an XP-Line. We’ve been talking about this for quite a while now and we just have to keep pushing at our end. The capability to do it [back in China] is definitely there.”

The MG 2 will be a smaller model than the MG 3, which is expected to undergo a facelift before relaunching in the Australian market in July 2024. It remains unclear if MG will also offer the planned MG 2 in the country.
