British automaker MG recently earned significant recognition for its all-electric 4 model in Australia. The country’s second most affordable EV model reportedly earned the highest five-star safety score from the Euro NCAP sister organization Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).
For context, MG 4 underwent the safety tests under ANCAP and Euro NCAP’s 2020-2022 test protocols. It must be noted that the protocols have more stringent standards in 2023.
As per the report, MG 4’s 5-star rating marks the first time for the brand under the 2020-2022 protocols. The first was the petrol-based HS SUV in 2019.
Furthermore, this latest safety recognition is also the second time the brand got five stars from the organization for its electric vehicle offerings. The first BEV model was the ZS EV, which also gained the highest rating in 2019.
Safety test results
All variants of MG 4 available in Australian and New Zealand markets garnered the following safety ratings:
- Adult Occupant Protection – 83%
- Child Occupant Protection – 86%
- Vulnerable Road User Protection (pedestrians and cyclists) – 75%
- Safety Assist technology – 81%
ANCAP asserted that the all-electric MG 4 functioned excellently in Child Occupant Protection tests. It apparently got perfect scores for dynamic side impacts. It also received high scores in the dynamic front impact and restraint installation standards.
In addition, it also scored high for Adult Occupant Protection. It had full scores on all the side impacts, oblique poles, and rescue and extraction tests. However, it performed poorly on far-side impact tests due to its lack of a center airbag.
Moreover, the EV also received high scores for most of the safety assist systems, such as the following:
- seat belt reminders
- driver monitoring
- autonomous emergency braking (AEB) junction assist, etc.
MG 4 also had strong results on the Vulnerable Road User Protection test, particularly on upper and lower leg impacts. Its AEB forward pedestrian and cyclist detection systems also gained high results.
