Legacy automaker Mercedes-Benz plans to prioritize electric vehicle advancement as it sees them “technically superior” to internal combustion engine vehicles.
Mercedes CEO Ola Kalleniues just told German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that the automaker prefers EVs over e-fuel combustion cars, Automotive News reports.
Mercedes to become an all-electric brand
CEO Kalleniues also reiterated Mercedes’s goals of producing all-electric vehicle designs.
“We already said four years ago that our new vehicle fleet across the entire value chain should become CO2-neutral in balance sheet terms by 2039.
That is our goal.”

He further outlined EV’s benefits in power efficiency, calling it “sensationally good.”
“The electric car is still a young technology compared to the combustion engine.
We still see great potential for progress: the electric drive will overtake the internal combustion engine in terms of performance before the end of this decade.”

According to Kallenius, the automaker is still attempting to modify ICEs to comply with the new Euro 7 emissions standards. However, Mercedes will cut its spending on ICEs by almost 80% by 2026.

In addition, Kallenius reaffirmed plans to focus the business’ growth approach on the high-end market while simultaneously selling entry-level cars.
“The new technology we are developing for our luxury models to ensure ecological sustainability will also be used in other cars at some point in the future.
And do not forget that our cars last longer. That is also a contribution to sustainability.”
