Japanese legacy automaker Mazda announced its new partnership with Tesla for the integration of the North American Charging Standard (NACS) port into its electric vehicles starting in 2025.
Mazda EVs to access Tesla Supercharger network
According to the press release, Mazda will start equipping its electric vehicle offerings in the North American market with NACS ports starting in 2025
Mazda’s NACS adoption seems different from that of other electric automakers in North America, as it does not indicate any plans to use an adapter before actually integrating the port in its upcoming models. However, it seems to be reasonable, given that the Japanese automaker only has a few offerings in North America.
This significant development will enable the Japanese automaker to access Tesla’s enormous and reliable charging network with more than 15,000 Superchargers across the region.
Mazda’s US footprint
Mazda currently has no battery-electric vehicle model in the US market as it stopped selling the MX-30 last year amid its increased focus on the CX-50 Hybrid, CX-90 PHEV, and the upcoming CX-70 PHEV.
In hindsight, Mazda’s MX-30 sales only reached 181 units in 2021 and 324 in 2022. Its sales dropped to 66 until June 2023, according to Electric Cars Report. These weak sales figures prompted the automaker to announce plans to kill the MX-30 in the US in July 2023.
Nonetheless, it still decided to join the growing NACS family in the region as it prepares to launch new EV models in the future.
