Indian legacy automaker Maruti will finally penetrate the electric vehicle industry with the introduction of the eVX in 2025, ” Auto Car India reports.
“Our first EV, an SUV, will be launched in the next financial year (FY2024-2025). At present, the SMG facility at Hansalpur has three plants – A, B and C. Now, to manufacture the EV, a new production line will be added.”
Maruti Suzuki Executive Director of Corporate Affairs Rahul Bharti
Timeline
Maruti officials officially confirmed plans to launch the brand’s inaugural electric vehicle, eVX, by the Financial Year 2024-2025.
According to previous reports, Maruti may unveil the model around October 2024. Meanwhile, the industry may expect a price announcement in early 2025.
Interestingly, the eVX will reportedly have a twin model from Japanese automaker Toyota. However, it will arrive at a later date in both the local and foreign markets.
What’s currently known about the model?
Bharti disclosed that the eVX will be a high-spec electric SUV with a 60kWh battery pack that can enable a 550 km driving range.
However, he emphasized that the company has yet to specify the official production target at the plant.
The eVX and its upcoming Toyota twin will ride on the Japanese automaker’s 27PL skateboard platform. For context, this platform will supposedly open up doors for more low-cost EV models in the coming years.
In addition, both models will have a length of 4.3 meters with generous cabin space owing to the born-EV architecture.
Production location
Maruti asserted that the eVX production will occur in its Suzuki Motor Gujarat’s (SMG) facility at Hansalpur, which currently operates three plants. The company aims to build a new production line to accommodate the new model’s production.
It is worth noting that Maruti Suzuki India fully owns the SMG facility, which has been open since 2017. It apparently boasts an annual production capacity of more than 7.5 lakh units, according to Business Standard.
With the addition of a new production line, the SMG facility’s current capacity will undoubtedly increase in the next few years.
Maruti already started testing the eVX model in India earlier this year. We will likely gain more details about the inaugural model closer to its global debut. As for the pricing, the automaker has yet to reveal the price range of the eVX. However, recent speculations suggest that the model may cost above Rs 10 lakh.
