Electric vehicle startup Lucid Motors formally announced in a press release that it partnered with Tesla for the North American Charging Standard (NACS) as it aims to expand its customers’ charging options.
“Adopting NACS is an important next step to providing our customers with expanded access to reliable and convenient charging solutions for their Lucid vehicles.”
Peter Rawlinson, CEO and CTO at Lucid
Announcement highlights
Just like most electric automakers that have already committed to NACS adoption, Lucid Motors will also begin integrating the new charging standard’s port in its next-gen vehicles by 2025.
However, its plan to provide an adapter for its Combined Charging System-equipped (CCS) vehicles deviates from most Tesla NACS adopters’ release target of 2024. According to Lucid, the necessary NACS adapter will only arrive in 2025. Teslarati noted that the said adapter would come as Tesla’s Magic Dock hardware.
These efforts will enable Lucid customers to access Tesla’s 15,000+ reliable Superchargers in North America by 2025.
“We believe that a unified charging standard, backed by the nationwide rollout of future-ready higher-voltage charging stations, will be a critical step in empowering American consumers to adopt electric vehicles.”
Peter Rawlinson, CEO and CTO at Lucid
NACS adoption progress
Electrek noted that the NACS was originally just Tesla’s flagship electric vehicle charging connector. Impressively, it began to advance as the most favored charging plug throughout North America.
However, some EV models from other brands with the CCS port still need an adapter to be compatible with the innovative charging standard.
In a significant development, Tesla’s closest rival in the region expressed strong support for the NACS connector. Ford’s announcement this past summer prompted other companies, including General Motors, to follow suit.

Lucid’s portfolio currently offers one model, the Air EV. Nonetheless, it has numerous model variants that customers can choose from. Its upcoming second offering, Gravity SUV, will debut this fall before deliveries start next year.
Its decision to adopt Tesla’s NACS will undoubtedly boost the demand for the Air and the upcoming Gravity model, considering American customers’ significant valuation for an enormous and reliable charging network.
